Principal Update: 11/12/21
Posted by SBLSD on 11/12/2021
The Book Fair was a huge success. Thank you families for your support. Students enjoyed picking out a book or two. I hope they are sharing with you what they are reading. There is nothing better than to curl up with a good book on a stormy fall evening or day. Thank you PTA for providing this opportunity to our students. We truly appreciate you and all your hard work.
Conferences:
We look forward to meeting with families next week for conferences. Please remember that November 17,18,19 and 23 are all early release days and students will be dismissed at 11:40am. We will start our dismissal procedure at 11:30am with our Kinder/First Grade students and their siblings. If your child would like a lunch to go on conference days, please have them let their teacher know.
Drop off:
At arrival, please be sure to wait until an adult is out there before letting your child out of the car. Students must be dropped off from the drop off line and not from our parking lot. Students should be walked into the building by an adult if you are parked in the parking lot. Please also be mindful of your speed and yield to cars that are still unloading their child when going around them to exit the line. Student safety is our number one priority. Thank you for your cooperation.
Mayor’s Challenge Food Drive Information:
Our school is participating in the Mayor's Challenge Food Drive to provide Thanksgiving for all! The Food Drive will take place over the course of 7 school days: November 12-22. Each class will be competing to feed our ENTIRE community and win a reward for their class! Please view the flyer below to learn about the items of greatest need. Thank you so much for supporting our community!
Upcoming Dates:
PTA General Membership Meeting Tuesday, November 16 at 4:00pm in the CWE Library
Conferences November 17, 18, 19 and 23. Students Dismissed at 11:40am.
No School November 24-26- Happy Thanksgiving!
Have a great weekend!

Principal Update: 11/5/21
Posted by SBLSD on 11/5/2021
Fall is in full swing and the weather is changing. We have had some beautiful weather and a few rainy days as well. Please remind your child to dress appropriately for the weather. We do go outside as much as possible to enjoy our Playworks games.
Veteran’s Day is November 11, 2021 and there is no school on that day. This is a day that we honor our Veterans who have served our country. We thank you all for your service and miss our assemblies where we get to honor you in person. A huge thank you to Carrie Huss, our music teacher who has put together a slide show honoring our special Veterans that will be shared with students on November 10th.
Conferences
We look forward to meeting with you during conferences. It is such a valuable time to partner with you and share your child’s progress. Be sure to sign up for a conference with your child’s teacher if you haven't already. Please come through our front doors and be sure to wear a mask while inside the building. It is best to arrive 5 minutes before your scheduled time.
Lost and Found
The Lost and Found has been piling up over the past few weeks. If your child is missing anything, encourage them to let their teacher know so that they can come down and take a look. We will also have all items out during conferences for you to look through with your child.
Book Fair
The Book Fair has returned and we are thrilled that our fabulous PTA is able to provide this opportunity to our Orcas. Students will be able to shop the Book Fair during their usual library time. You can sign up for Scholastic’s e-wallet payment service at https://www.scholastic.com/bf/crestwoodelementaryschool5. Purchases can also be made with cash, credit/debit card, or check written to Crestwood PTA. Please note that the sales tax is not included in the listed prices. Thank you again PTA for bringing this opportunity to our students.
Dismissal
If you are picking up your child early, please arrive before 3:00pm, park in our parking lot and walk into the office to excuse your child. When a line has formed, please stay in the line and do not pass cars. It is a safety concern. Our carpick line begins moving at 3:00pm. Thank you for your cooperation. Also, If you have a car tag, please make it visible at both checkpoints. When they are laying on the dash it is difficult to see and we want to be efficient and ensure you go through the line in a timely manner. Thank you!
Celebrating Native American Heritage Month
November is Native American Heritage Month, or as it is commonly referred to, American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month. A time to celebrate the rich and diverse history of Native Americans, it’s important to acknowledge the contributions Native people have given and continue to give to society.
SBLSD’s Native American Education Program serves more than 200 students throughout the District who have Native American heritage. Since mid-September, a program coordinator has been in our K-8 classrooms working in person with students on a vast array of cultural lessons and activities.
Stay tuned throughout the month for more information, resources and celebrations focused on Native American culture.
Have a great weekend!

Principal Update: 10/22/21
Posted by SBLSD on 10/22/2021
We hope this letter finds you well. We have just a few important reminders this week:
Celebrations
This month we are recognizing students for being respectful. Students have been so kind and demonstrate many different ways of showing respect to their teachers, peers and support staff. We have heard students cheering each other outside on the playground and offering support to each other in their classrooms. Way to go Orcas!
Dismissal
Thank you families for your flexibility with our new dismissal procedure. It has been going great and we have received some positive feedback in regards to the change which has been helpful.
Conferences
Our Parent/Teacher conferences are just around the corner. Families will have the option to meet in person or on zoom. Conferences will be held on November 17,18,19, and 23. Students will be dismissed at 11:40 am. Sack lunches will be provided for students to take home. Please look for information coming home soon from your child’s teacher on how to sign up for your conference.
Weather
With the change in the weather, please be sure that your child is coming to school dressed for the weather. Bring a coat and wear appropriate shoes for outside play. We do have quite a bit of clothing items in the lost and found. Please contact the office and set up an appointment to come in if your child is missing anything.
Have a wonderful weekend!

Principal Update: 10/15/21
Posted by SBLSD on 10/15/2021
Happy Friday! We hope this letter finds you well. Our students have been in school a little over a month already. Routines have been established, students are modeling the Orca 5 and earning Got Caught’s, and learning is underway. We’re wrapping up our Fall Reading Benchmark Assessments. Stay tuned for your child’s results.

-
Tuesday 10/19 - State Mandated Bus Exit Drills, a.m.
-
Wednesday, 10/20 - Math SBA Testing, Grades 4 and 5
-
Wednesday, 10/27 - ELA SBA testing, Grades 4 and 5
-
Friday, 11/5 - End of Trimester 1
-
Thursday 11/11 - No School, Veteran’s Day
Coats and Water Bottles
Please send your child to school with a coat and a water bottle each day. If your child has any missing items, the “lost and found” is located near the gym and music room.
SBA Testing
This fall, 4th and 5th grade students across the state will be taking the Math and ELA Smarter Balanced Assessment (SBA). Due to the disruption in testing during the pandemic, 4th grade students will take the 3rd grade SBA and 5th grade students will take the 4th grade SBA. The SBA is a computer adaptive, standards-aligned assessment. Each assessment will take approximately 60-75 minutes to complete. The purpose of these assessments is to gather baseline data and measure growth over time. All students will take their current grade level SBA in the spring.
The work students do each day in class prepares them for these tests, so please assure your child they don’t need to stress. Our goal is simply for every child to give his or her very best effort. You can support your child by ensuring they get a good night’s sleep, eat a healthy breakfast, arrive at school on time on testing days, and by encouraging them to do their best.
COVID-19 Update
It is that time of year when common colds and flu-like symptoms are on the rise. In the midst of COVID-19, this is more complex than ever before. We will continue to follow the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department Guidelines and SBLSD Protocols. We know this can present challenges for families. Thank you in advance for your understanding and cooperation.
When Does My Child Need To Stay Home From School?
If your child has any of the following symptoms, please keep them home and notify their teacher as well as our school nurse: sherise_cruz@sumnersd.org:
-
Class A Symptoms: Fever of >100.4 or chills, cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, loss of taste or smell
-
Class B Symptoms: Fatigue, muscle or body aches, congestion or runny nose, diarrhea (2 or more loose stools in 24 hours), headache, sore throat, nausea or vomiting
Your child must also stay home from school when:
-
He or she tests positive for Covid-19.
-
A family member who lives in the same household tests positive for COVID-19
-
He or she has been identified as a “close contact” with someone who is Covid positive. (A close contact has spent 15 or more minutes over a 24-hour period within 6 feet of the confirmed case or within 3 feet in a K-12 indoor classroom setting. Note: The infectious period is 48 hours prior to symptoms or a positive result when a person is asymptomatic.)
Please call Crestwood right away if any of the above are true. We appreciate all you’re doing to help keep our school community safe and healthy.
COVID-19 Exposure Notifications:
If your child is identified as a close contact of a person who tested positive for Covid-19 at school or on the bus, you will be notified via a phone call and/or e-mail. For these cases, the TPCHD recently approved a shortened quarantine. Per the “Test to Return Policy” students who are quarantined due to being a close contact can now return to school under the following conditions:
-
Have been quarantined at least 7 days from the date of exposure.
-
Receive a negative test result (test must occur on day 5 or later).
-
Acceptable tests include Rapid, PCR, Antigen, Home Tests, etc.
-
-
Provide proof of negative test results to the building nurse: sherise_cruz@sumnersd.org
Again, if your child is identified as a close contact, we will walk you through this process with specific dates.
COVID-19 Non-exposure Notifications:
When any staff member or student (Pre-K thru grade 5) at Crestwood tests positive for COVID-19, all staff and families will receive a COVID-19 Non-exposure Notification through our family communication system. This is a District Policy to ensure transparent communication. A COVID tracker can also be found on the school district website.
Student Absences:
Whether your child is absent for one day or many days, it is helpful if you e-mail their teacher. Teachers will be given a grace period of 24 hours from notification to gather work that can be completed at home, although there are many cases when the turnaround time is even quicker. For students who have extended absences:
-
Teachers will provide daily work just like any ordinary absence
-
Optional: Teacher will send home a Chromebook and charger if necessary to access assignments or online platforms
-
No live Zooms will be required
We know this is a lot of information. Our hope is this can be a resource for you to refer to when questions arise. As always, you’re more than welcome to contact us.
Have a wonderful extended weekend with your family.
Warmly,
Lisa Brozovich, Principal
Alisha Maulding, Assistant Principal

Principal Update: 9/24/21
Posted by SBLSD on 9/24/2021
It has been a wonderful start to the year. Thank you families for partnering with us as we navigate this new school year.
Celebrations
We are so proud of students and how they are demonstrating the Orca 5 each day. They are being Safe, Respectful, Responsible, Caring, and Great Learners. Ask your child how they are getting “CAUGHT” for the Orca 5. We hope you are seeing these tickets coming home. Way to go Orcas!
Dismissal
Thank you all for your flexibility as we have made some adjustments to our Dismissal procedures, specifically those students being picked up by car. As a friendly reminder, please have your car tags visible and to continue to watch your speed as you proceed through the line and down our driveway.
PTA
Our first general membership meeting is scheduled for Monday, September 27, 2021 at 4:15pm outside under our Playshed. We are excited to meet in person for this meeting. Please remember to maintain social distancing, 6ft apart. Families are more than welcome to sit together. We look forward to seeing you there.
We are Hiring!
If you are interested in being a paraeducator who works with small groups of students and likes to be outdoors to supervise recess, please apply for the CWE job. Go to our district website to apply.
Free & Reduced-Price Meals
All families who wish to apply for free or reduced-price meals with the Sumner-Bonney Lake School District are encouraged to fill out an application at any time during the school year. A new application must be completed at the beginning of each school year. Applications are available at all school locations. Once an application is completed properly it will not be necessary to complete a new application during the school year. CWE families can look for these forms being sent home in your child’s take home folder.
Apply for free or reduced-price meals online
Families may now apply online for free or reduced meals in Family Access. When you submit an application for free or reduced meals, the information you provide is confidential and is only seen by the Food Service department. Access to the Applications tab may vary by the school that your child attends, however you only need to fill out one application that includes all members of your family.
Below are instructions for completing the online application for Free or Reduced Meals. Click on the link below to view the full instructions. Instructions will automatically open in a new browser window to allow you to make changes or enter information into Family Access while viewing the instructions.
Instructions for submitting an Online Free or Reduced Meal Application

Principal Update: 9/16/21
Posted by SBLSD on 9/16/2021
Please note changes to our afternoon Car Pick Up Procedures starting tomorrow, Friday, September 17, 2021. We want to ensure the safety of our students, staff and families. Be mindful of the new route and staff guiding traffic around the building. See Diagram at the bottom of the letter.
NEW PM PICK UP
Proceed in line to the student pick up area which we call the “Pick Up Zone”. We have moved this area to outside the POD B doors and the outside portables. We will be directing traffic around the backside of our building through the playground. Students who are regularly picked up and those students who have a note for special pick up situations will be waiting there. Students will be lined up according to grade. If families have more than one student in more than one grade level, the older student(s) will stand with the youngest student in the family. There are staff members there to assist students getting into cars safely. Please have your car tags hanging where they are visible.
Our goal is to quickly and efficiently get students loaded safely into their vehicles. By moving the loading zone, we are hopeful that this will alleviate the traffic congestion on West Tapps Drive. Please arrive no earlier than 2:50pm and come at your child’s designated pick up time. This also helps with the traffic congestion. We will be asking families to return to the car line up if you are earlier than your scheduled time and do not have special permission. Thank you for your understanding. Unfortunately, we do not have the space for cars to wait.
3:00 K-1 and siblings
3:10 2-3 and siblings, walkers
3:20 4-5 and siblings
Please DO NOT attempt to walk up to the Pick Up Zone to retrieve your child.
We have a small group of students who have been designated as being “walking” students. These students will wait out front by our Flag Pole with a staff member to meet their families.
ALSO, it is important that parents NEVER attempt to retrieve a child from the bus line/area. This is a very unsafe situation! If your child has already lined up to get on a bus and you wish to take them with you, you will need to come into the office and we will walkie-talkie to the staff members on bus duty to retrieve your child.
You may see some families parking and walking up to get students. These are PRESCHOOL FAMILIES ONLY. Preschool begins and ends a few minutes earlier than our classes. For our youngest students, this is the safest protocol.
Safety is our top priority and we thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
Click here to view the new pick-up zone.
Sincerely,
Lisa Brozovich, Principal

School Day Ends

Breakfast:
If your child is eating breakfast at school, please remind them to go through the gym door upon arrival. They will pick up their breakfast and take it to their classroom.
Covid Guidelines
The safety of each and every student and staff member is our top priority. We had great success with preventative measures last year and will continue to follow health department guidelines. If your child has symptoms or is not feeling well, please contact our school nurse, Mrs. Cruz.
Masks: Please continue to remind your child to properly wear their mask while inside the school building. Masks must fit securely to the face, covering both the mouth and nose. Gators are not permitted. Teachers will provide outdoor mask breaks throughout the school day. Masks are not required outdoors at recess. Of course, staff and students may wear a mask outside if they would like to.
Social Distancing: In classrooms, students will maintain 3 feet of distance between each other to the degree possible. During lunch and in common areas outside of the classroom, we will maximize opportunities to increase physical distance between students as much as possible.
Arrival
Car drop off: Parents, please stay in your vehicle at all times. Students should exit the car on the side nearest the sidewalk for safety. Encourage your child to have their coat, backpack, and mask on when a staff member opens the car door to greet them. If you arrive after 8:25am, we ask that you park your car and walk your child to the front office for a tardy slip.
(Note: Preschool parents are required to park and walk their children to the preschool portable.)
Dismissal
Bus: Access the ONLINE BUS STOP SEARCH TOOL to find the bus route specific to your address. Please have your child at the bus stop 5 minutes before the scheduled bus arrival time. Due to a severe bus shortage, our bus routes and drop-off times will be impacted. We apologize for any inconvenience and we appreciate your patience with the late buses. If you choose to pick up your child instead of having them ride the bus home, please contact your child’s teacher and the front office to let us know of this change.
Car Pick-up: During the first week of school you can help us by putting a sign in your front windshield with your child’s last name and grade level. We will send home a “car tag” with your child’s designated number as soon as possible. Siblings will be assigned the same number. Lastly, do your very best to arrive at your child’s designated dismissal time. We understand traffic can be unpredictable and appreciate your effort to help keep the bus lane clear and expedite dismissal. Please note we have adjusted the dismissal times to alleviate the traffic congestion.

Covid Guidelines
The safety of each and every student and staff member is our top priority. We had great success with preventative measures last year and will continue to follow health department guidelines.
-
Attestation Forms: Quarterly health attestations and daily temperature checks are no longer required. Continue to monitor your child for symptoms daily and keep them home if they are not healthy, have been exposed to someone with COVID-19, or have tested positive for COVID-19. Symptoms to watch for may include but are not limited to the following: fever, cough, loss of taste or smell, sore throat, congestion or runny nose, diarrhea, or vomiting. We ask that you communicate absences due to illness to our school nurse, Mrs. Cruz. (253)891-4550
-
Masks: All school personnel, volunteers, visitors, and students must wear a face covering while inside the building, during arrival and dismissal, and on the school bus.

-
Handwashing: Students will routinely wash or sanitize their hands upon arrival, as they transition to and from recess and specialists, before and after eating, and at dismissal.
-
Cleaning and Disinfecting: Student tables and desks will be sanitized before and after eating breakfast and lunch, as well as at the end of the day. Throughout the building, high touch-point surfaces will be cleaned routinely.
We appreciate your partnership and commitment to doing everything we can in order to continue with in-person learning for all students everyday.

Meals:
During the 2021-2022 school year, all students can eat breakfast and lunch at no cost. If your child would like a “grab and go” breakfast they’ll enter through the gym hallway in the morning, grab breakfast at the cafeteria, and head to class. Teachers will collect a “hot lunch” count each day. At lunch time, students will rotate through the cafeteria, socially distanced, and will proceed to the classroom where they’ll eat.
School Supplies
Crestwood families have the option of paying a supply fee ($20) online. You can access this by logging on to SBLSD at www.sumnersd.org(not family access). Click here for instructions. If you would like to donate a box of Kleenex to your child’s classroom, we would greatly appreciate it. Thank you for supporting CWE!
As always, do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions. We look forward to seeing you all soon!
